Manulife Financial Offices In 2001, Manulife Financial invested more than $10 million to redevelop the 300,000 sq. ft. King Centre shopping mall into an office complex, bringing 1300 employees to the core. It is important to increase downtown employment because it increases activity and improves the economy of the community. http://www.region.waterloo.on.ca/web...df?OpenElement Generally yes it is possible (depending on what provisions were made when the original structure was built), a local example being the Sunlife Tower in Uptown. The 1976 addition included provisions for an office tower...Construction of the eighth addition, a 13-storey office tower, began on June 11, 1986. It was built atop the existing four-storey and a penthouse portion built in 1976. An open house was held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 1987 for the public to have a tour of the new tower. The tower could contain up to 144,000 square feet. Although a tower isn't in the works, "we are very pleased that is an opportunity for us in the future," said Trevor Matthews, executive vice-president of Manulife's Canadian operations. [Ray Royce] planned to turn the building into an office complex and was counting on Manulife to take over the space Sears is vacating. Instead, Manulife offered to buy the property. |

Wow, that's quite great news. Here's hoping it'll happen. That'd change the makeup of Downtown for a long time. Unfortunately a long time is exactly what it'll take for that to happen. |
